In mid-July, nearly a dozen of Montana’s best breweries come to party in Virginia City for the Dog and Grog Microbrew Festival. Not only can you experience this historic ghost town, preserved for you to explore, but you’ll find fun activities to enjoy between pints of local tasty beverages during the festival. Right next to the Bale of Hay Saloon, you’ll find the tent where the beer magic happens, where you can drink your way through some of the best craft breweries in Montana while you relax under the big top.

The Goods Your Ticket Delivers

Get the package deal when you arrive early. It comes with eight tasters of beer, a tasty polish dog (also known as grog dog) and a limited-edition commemorative glass to help you swig your way through some of the brews on tap.

Live Music and historic ambiance

Dance it up, tap your feet, or drum your fingers to some of the best local bands at this fest. Added to the historic Old West element, there is live music that rings through this ghostly town. Just like the beer, the music is on tap all day and into the evening, with a roster of tunes to enjoy while you sip away.

The Breweries

Simply put: a downright good time. The collective campsites create for an awesome community space where everyone has come together for the same reason--to have a blast and listen to great music they all love. The buzz is palpable and absolutely contagious! Whether you're heading down with your buddies for spring break or taking the family, the festival truly has something for everyone. Attendees can chow down on local grub while sipping a beer under some of the most sweeping views the valley has to offer. In a space like this, it's nearly impossible not to have a great time. The three days will be over before you know it, and you'll already be looking forward to next year.

The Breweries

In years past, a few of our favorites have turned out to pour a pint or two. Here are a few to look out for.

Lewis and Clark Brewing

Lewis and Clark Brewing out of Helena puts the expedition back in beer drinking. You’ll love their Prickly Pear Ale, which is an ideal tribute to the spiky cactus that caused the Lewis & Clark Expedition so much grief. And it’s pretty tasty, to boot!

Bitter Root Brewing

The aptly named Bitter Root Brewing hails from the Bitterroot Valley near Missoula. But the only thing bitter about them is their IPAs, which you’ll love to sip on while you enjoy the warm Virginia City air.

Bayern Brewing

Traditionally brewed Bavarian beer from Bayern is the perfect taste for summer. The brewery follows the strict brewing tenets set forth by the German Law of Purity in 1516, with no artificial carbonation, berries added, or other odd ingredients. That means the beers are all fully matured, a process that takes nearly four times longer than modern conventional methods. And the difference is so good, you can taste it.

Quarry Brewing

Quarry Brewing out of Butte puts local flavor in the Virginia City beer drinking, with an added taste of the Butte–Virginia City rivalry that existed at the end of the last century. When the two cities sparred to become the state capital, both ultimately lost to Helena. But time has healed the discord, and now Quarry comes to town each year for the Dog and Grog fest.

The After party

If you’ve been tasting all day and you’re ready for a break for more beer, head to the Brewery Follies to enjoy an outrageously inappropriate vaudeville show that will leave your sides splitting. It goes best with another beer, or you could mix things up with a hard cider. Be ready to take a joke, have a laugh, and raise an eyebrow in Virginia City's big show.

To cut out the risk of driving back to the Sac after a day of drinking, consider booking the Sac bus, a vintage 1960s Aerobus limo that can take you and your friends to the festival and bring you back without a worry. Let us know how we can accomodate you as you enjoy this festival and the weekends fun.
