Small-town Montana ups the ante when it comes to winter fun. In and around Three Forks, you’ll find the charm all through winter and beyond, with these seasonal events that make snowy weather even better.
The annual tradition of Candlelight Tours through Lewis & Clark Caverns brings a whole new view to this underground wonderland. You’ll gather your lanterns and head three-quarters of a mile up to the cave entrance. Once you reach the halfway point in the cave, the candles are lit and the lights go off for an utterly otherworldly experience. While the candlelight tours will not be held in 2018 as the park works to revamp its lighting system, 2019 will bring them back with a bang. Call the park to reserve your spot in advance. These popular tours typically take place during the three weekends of December leading up to Christmas.
The Three Forks Christmas Stroll takes place on a Saturday in early December, lighting up the town with twinkle lights, and featuring sleigh rides, carolers and the famed candy cane lane to celebrate from 4 to 10pm. You’ll want to walk around to check out local businesses and snag a photo with Santa. Get out and enjoy the town fun for the whole evening, or just dip in on your way to dinner to check it out.
Arts and crafts events at the Three Forks library make it easy to get in the spirit of the season. Make a turkey from a book that’s seen better days, get into paper-based wreath making or see what other events are on offer. This will let you get in touch with quaint local community, even when you’re only in town for a quick visit.

In fact, if it strikes your fancy, you can even sign up to participate yourself. Just let the organizers know in advance, and plan to bring your own sculpting tools. Whether you want to observe or get your hands dirty, this early-December Saturday event begins at 9 am, with all sculpting to be finished by 3 pm. Awards are handed out that evening at 6 pm.
